10 / SAFETY

Broken down? Do this now

Based on the Highway Code. If anyone is hurt or in danger, call 999.

On a motorway
  • Go left. Move into the left lane and onto the hard shoulder or into an emergency area if you can. Stop as far left as you can with your wheels turned left.
  • Hazard lights on. Sidelights too if it's dark.
  • Get out by the left-hand doors, away from the traffic, and wait behind the barrier if there is one.
  • Don't put out a warning triangle on a motorway, and don't go back to the car.
  • Then call us, or use the roadside emergency phone.
On a motorway with no hard shoulder
  • Get to an emergency area if you can (blue signs with an orange SOS phone), or leave at the next exit.
  • If you can't get off the carriageway, or it isn't safe to get out: stay in the car with your seatbelt on and hazard lights on, and call 999 straight away. Ask for the police.
  • Only get out if you're sure it's safe, by the left-hand doors, and wait behind the barrier.
On a dual carriageway or fast A-road
  • Get off the road if you can: a lay-by, a wide verge or a side road.
  • Hazard lights on if you're in the way of traffic. Sidelights too if it's dark.
  • Get everyone out on the side away from the traffic and wait well away from the car, behind a barrier if there is one.
  • Never stand between your car and oncoming traffic.
  • A warning triangle goes at least 45 metres behind the car on the same side, but only if you can place it safely.
In town
  • Pull in somewhere out of the way if you can, and put your hazard lights on if you're blocking traffic.
  • Wait on the pavement or somewhere safe, not in the road.
  • Tell us about anything that affects getting to you, like a narrow street or a car park height limit.
At night or in bad weather
  • Keep your sidelights on as well as your hazard lights.
  • Wear something light or reflective if you have it.
  • Don't stand where you'd block other drivers from seeing your lights.
  • Keep your phone on so we can call you back.

11 / FAQ

Questions

How much does recovery cost?

It depends on the distance, the time of day and the vehicle. Tell us where you are and where it's going and we'll give you the price. Emergency call-outs and out-of-hours jobs carry an extra charge. You always get the price on the phone before we set off.

Can you come out at night or on a Sunday?

Our normal hours are Mon–Sat, 9am–6pm. Outside those we still come out for emergencies, at an extra charge, and we'll give you the price on the phone first.

How long will you take to get to me?

Usually within 60 minutes in Aberdeen. Further out it depends on the distance, and we'll give you a time when we call.

Can you recover an electric or hybrid car?

Yes. Electric and hybrid cars travel on the flatbed with all four wheels off the road.

Can I pay by card?

Not on the truck. We take bank transfer or cash.

Can you take my car to my own garage or home?

Yes. Tell us where it needs to go, whether that's home, your garage or a dealer, and we'll price it when we call.

What should I do while I wait?

Stay safe and away from traffic. Our "Broken down? Do this now" guide covers motorways, fast roads, towns and night-time.
